As this distribution is growing also via your comment and suggestion, I just decided to implement this page. By commenting you can ask and suggest new features you want to find in next Raspyfi releases. Some examples:

- google translata available on each page

I would like sessions and user account(s). I am using Raspyfi on a Raspberry Pi at work, since our radio died a few days ago. Unfortunately one of our collegues finds it funny to constantly play songs instead of a webradio stream. I don’t know if that’s realistic, but would it be possible to improve sound quality for analog-output use (DACless)? Some kind of white noise supression or something like that?

Currently I have all my music on my PC which I connect through the NAS
settings(SMB). It would be nice if I don’t have to reboot Raspyfi to get
the connecting back after I turn my PC off and on again.

I
don’t now alot about booting linux, but raspyfi tries very hard to get
an IP address for eth0 through DHCP while no ethernet cable is
connected…

It would be nice if everything was in English. As a
Dutch guy my Italian is not so good. When I deleted an item from the
playlist I ran into the word recuperare.

PS: Raspyfi is great and I love you for developing it! GUI is great by the way.

This fix to stop the Edimax dongle sleeping seems to have really worked for me :Create a new 8192cu.conf file (using nano or any other editor) at the following location /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf
populate it with the following command

options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0

Better hardware volume control. I’m using a XMOS USB-to-I2S and a ES9023 DAC, both from DIYINHK. Volume settings below 70 produce no sound.

  Yes, I’m aware of this issue. I struggled a lot on this, but this is a problem of Alsa that treats the volume controls as linear and not alghoritmics… I’m waiting for a next release of Alsa, hope that this will fix it

I’m super happy with the V1.0 release. It is superb!

I plan to use RaspyFi to build network connected music appliances like the Sonos system. I would like to have a feature that uses the GPIO bus to actuate a relay for switching on power to accessories like an integrated amplifier or a remote amplifier, depending on your needs.

I’m also looking forward to multi-zone control. I suspect that RaspyFi will need the ability to poll the network and rename itself in order to avoid several RaspiFi devices conflicting with each other and at setup I would probably want to rename the devices to office.local, livingroom.local, bedroom.local, etc….

For a single zone this thing is awesome!

Great project.
Maybe an option in the gui to setup a new user. I setup up another user on the command line and spent two hours wondering why alsa could not find my sound card. After adding the user to the relevant places in /etc/group everything worked nicely.
Also mopidy instead of or in addition to mpd would be nice.(for spotify and soundcloud). Actually this might work already.

Please implement PulseAudio as the common audio framework.
Docco’s (& some experience) seems to indicated that this goes some way towards addressing some of the auto quality issues associated with the analogue out, and will allow for the multiplexing (simultaneous playback) to & from multiple concurrent resources – i.e. play from multiple sources & to multiple devices.
This approach will also allow for setting up the device as a PA target sink, so that I can do without the airplay when needed.
A web-based PA admin may be needed in v.2

A great feature would be the ability to rename the raspyfi for airplay purposes in the settings menu. I’m thinking about installing multiple raspyfi boxes on my network and it would be cool to have the ability to easily name them, for example: living room, backyard, garage, etc.

    Bluemon is a program to monitor bluetooth devices, used much for home automation and it can trigger other programs or scripts.
    Difrent trigger levels for coming or leaving, false leave check and more. Love to come home to my favorite Spotify playlist.

just tried out raspify, up to now not possible to use it. my music database I have on my Server is only reachable via nfs, I only have Linux installed and I don’t wont to install samba.

first of all, realy nice work! I spend days getting my SMSL SD022 dac working in Raspbian but it just wont… after installing Raspyfy it worked immediately! But I miss one small function, I may want to suggest.

- Playing a audio cd using a external USB CD player with libcddb support

The Pi has HDMI output with support for audio, yet a quick search didn’t turn up anything on raspyfi support for driving a multimedia amp (“home cinema”) over HDMI, sending it the decoded digital music stream for DA conversion and amplification. I’m currently using a netbook running Foobar2000 to do just that, but wouldn’t mind something with an even smaller footprint

I would really like it if RaspyFi would auto resume the last song and playlist that was loaded when it powers back up after being shutdown. I plan on using this in my car and would like it to kinda act like a CD player of sorts. Great work BTW!! Love it!

Fantastic work! The only thing missing is to make this an UPnP renderer, which is a standard (if not perfect) today similar to AirPlay. Will UPnP introduce additional problems or degradation in sound quality (assuming the source/UPnP server sends bit perfect)? I guess not considering it uses the TCP protocol?

  Note also that the Pi has limited resources, and having this also running can degrade overall performance. We are studyin a way to disable or enable services on demand, based on the play method selected…

What I’d love to see is Google Music support. All of my music is stored on Google Music and would be a great feature to have.

It would be excellent if (maybe it alrede is, but i cant find it) if the system could remeber is scanning, I have a lot of music and sources on my internal net, and it takes a lot of time everytime i boot it, to make the songs available in the file viewer. so a one time scanning, and a force new scan if i have changed something would be nice..

  If you wait for the Database update to end, then it will remember all your network files. It takes a lot to finish, it’s a bug we’re currently addressing.
  If you change only a folder, you can then select “update this folder” from the browse section.

I have not downloaded or installed this yet, will be doing that soon as this is awesome. My question I think is a bit odd, I know this is for the RasPi to playback audio locally or from a NAS using a DAC. Could it somehow stream playback to other devices around the house like to a Raspbian set up or Chromecast device? I know you are working on multizone support to allow for Multiple Raspberry Pis to playback from a single control, which is also awesome.
Any ability to add the Free/Paid services like Pandora or Spotify?

I have just installed Raspyfi and it works perfectly with my Cambridge DACMagic Plus.

However, all my music files are ripped in M4A format to optimise sound quality. It would be great if Raspyfi could support this.

Hi – great project!!! What I’d like to have added: MinimServer (http://minimserver.com/). That way, I could also user your project as a “classic” uPnP/DNLA-streaming Server: Put my High-Resolution flac-files on the USB-Harddisc and MinimServer (similar to Twonky, but way better and lightweight), connected via LAN (or WiFi), streams the audio-data to my streaming client (I do use a LINN DS, control-point is an iPhone with the Plugplayer-App. That way, I would get best of both world in one package: a bitperfect DAC-solution “on the road” and a High-End streaming server for home-use. What do you think?

I’ve been running RaspyFi with a Bryston BDA-1 (USB input limited to 16bit/48kHz) and it works well and sounds great. I am running this as a complete mini audio server with DAC, USB WiFi, and a USB hard drive connected to a powered USB hub. WiFi is only used for control with MPod. So, great job so far, but I have a few items on my wishlist:

Are there any other processes that could be stopped with the way I am using RaspyFi? Occasionally I see the ACT LED flash and there will be a small glitch in the audio. The USB fix has been applied.

I tried to install Shairport for AirPlay support but found that some packages required for the install will not work. Could this be integrated, maybe as an option, in upcoming versions?

Might want to have a look at MagicPlay an its use with Android devices.

Hi I would like to add an display that shows the currently played track.

There are some howto s in the net but they all need kernel modules.

Maybe you could compile some display drivers directly within the kernel?

Hello. It would be really useful to have AirPlay included for those occasions when when there is music on your iOS device and not on your Pi, also, apps could take advantage of that too (e.g. BBC iPlayer etc.)

I would also like to confirm that the Fiio E17 portable headphone amp / DAC works with RC2 and Beta 1.0.

Hello, i don’t know if its possible to Set UP an infrared Sensor to do basically Things like next,Play and stop. I think it Would be like “Virtual cd”–> load your cd (or playlist) via iPad/pc/… And then Control via harmony (sends Custom Order)

Hi, this is really looking good and thanks for all your efforts.

PLEASE include a S/PDIF connection (preferably using a 75 ohm BNC connector)as I and many others have have real resistance to using USB interfaces and/or USB to S/PDIF converters (they add more loss to the original signal.)
The majority of high end DAC’s available always sound better via S/PDIF and experience far less jitter and electronic noise than via USB.

I hope this is doesn’t require a major redesign of the project.

my name´s Stefan, I´m from germany; a great project you have there.

I´m considering to buy a raspberry pi soon and to use RaspiFy for my battery-powered dac and headphone-amplifier, but there are two issues at the moment I think need to be solved or discussed before I´m actually getting more into this…

1) I really need .wav file support (16 bit 44.1kHz is ok for me) – when can we expect this to arrise (RC3 release date probably) ?

2) I plan to use Raspberry Pi model “A” WITHOUT(!) a keyboard attached to it for RaspyFi. My general thinking/opinion is, when using USB for high quality audio transfer, I don´t want any other external USB device attached to the USB port which I could probably avoid; but there´s one catch with this -> how to playback / skip tracks ? I don´t want to use a monitor/lcd either, only for configuration.

I have two ideas for the #2 issue:

Idea A) Copying RaspyFi System + the audio files I would like to playback onto one (the same) SD card with setting up some kind of automount/autoplay function: so booting up RPi -> auto boot/starting RaspyFi -> auto playback of the tracks on the playlist / on the SD card. I would be willing to create seperate SD cards always with the core system on them (if necessary) and with different audio files for this purpose. Once loaded, I believe RaspyFi still will load parts of the OS from SD card, so changing the SD card without the OS being installed upon would surely be critical. (if not please feedback)

Additional idea B) Using the GPIO Pins to provide a simple “keyboard” with “play”, “stop”, “previous”, “next” function while audio playback (=without the need to use a USB keyboard for this).

Any feedback/help on my ideas?

  Hi Stefan, thanks for the kind words! Your idea is very interesting (and clever the way you’re thinking to sort it out). It could be very useful for ambient sonorizations, museums , shops etc.
  I think the better way is the first. It’s very easy indeed. You can add to /etc/init.d/myruns the command you want to use.
  So, after mpd is loaded you can start the music playback…
  For example, you can add
  mpc play
  which will start your default playlist. Anyway, you should edit
  /etc/mpd.conf to enable mpd to start whithout network support.
  by editing:
  bind to address “localhost”
  And you should be good to go. As for .wav playback it will be back soon. I plan to release the RC3 in the weekend, or next week. (Hope to get all the things done).
  Please let me know how your project will progress, I’m really interested in it.

    Of course, still a GPIO keyboard would be a good way to actually control the playback. I will check the settings you suggested as soon as I will have everything in order and my Pi with me.
    
    Anyway, there´s something I´d like to share with you and the community, if you want to keep on reading, that is…
    
    today was one of those days I believe where Murphy´s Law had to strike again… I thought I could post some photos from my finished-battery-powered DAC/amp that I have been working on the last days and hours (it´s not yet finished but I´m close). At the moment I´m using an external industry-grade DIN-Rail power supply that has very low noise and ripple; it´s pretty decent but I´m expecting the battery-upgrade will lead to an even higher sound quality. I´d say no ripple at all is better than low ripple…
    
    So today I wanted to do some soldering; after I´ve finished and tested my circuit with my DMM, I noticed my switches have been burnt/damaged by the soldering iron and all that´s left from the switches is rubbbish. That really, really sucks…
    
    I´ve built and designed circuits/amps sucessfully before, but anyway, small parts, especially those small switches I wanted to use for optionally checking the voltage of the two battery packs (individually or linked together) seemed to be designed to be soldered only in automatic soldering-plants by some robots that get it done in under 1 second; as a hobbyist 2-4 seconds to solder some wires to a switch I would consider quite normal, but that seemed definetely long enough for the switches to actually fail or get damaged inside…
    
    oh well… back to order some new switches now! As soon as I will make any progress, I can keep you posted if you´re interested.
    
    Regaring the sound quality: that´s going to be interesting, too… I do hope the sound quality with RaspyFi is at least equal or better compared to Win XP + Foobar in kernel streaming mode. Frankly I like this combination very much and find it much more musical and definetely more enjoyable than listening to other players or with the ASIO hardware driver.
    
    If you´ve read this far then there´s something I´d like to share with you: at the moment I´m listening to a band that makes a mixture of progessive rock / modern classic, it may take some time and a few time listening before it really grabs you, but once you´re “infected” I find it pretty hard to listen to anything not as good as this.
    
    Surely I don´t need to mention you definetely need the cd-album to really enjoy this music, but maybe someone appreciates it, too, as a hint:

      I do really understand what you’ve felt with the swtitches! Happened so many times to me, the important thing is then take a breath, and do it again… You can only laugh at those things… I’m really interested in your project. If you want, you can document all the process and then we can post it as an article here on raspyfi. I think you’ll be ok with the quality as well, in my opinion it beats win 7 + asio4all…

        For anyone, who´s interested, here´s some info about After Crying:
        
        as you can see in After Crying´s discography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_crying), they have put out a lot of albums…
        
        their first album was “Overground Music”, with “singing” in english (but it´s not that natural sounding I must admit); their singing and voices actually do work best when they stick to their mother language, which is hungarian. That´s why I think the albums with hungarian spoken words are really special among all.
        
        Out of their albums there are some that I can recommend: (I did not check all of them out (yet) as I´ve stumbled upon After Crying only about two months ago)
        
        1. Megalázottak és Megszomorítottak (1992) (title is kind of hard to speak, even for me, although I do speak some hungarian…)
        2. Föld és Ég (1994)
        3. De profundis (1996)
        
        In 1994 one of their band members, Csaba Vedres, left After Crying and started making very good solo albums, the info about this is not yet translated in wikipedia (en), but you´ll find Csaba Vedres´s discography, even if you don´t understand the rest of the text, here:

It would be really nice if there where support for UPnP with something like gmrender-resurrect and AirPlay Audio with for example shairport straight “out of the box”. I’m not sure if this will mess up the excellent sound I’m getting out of my Pi right now. Thinking of maybe giving it a go. Any ideas if it works or not?

  I have been wondering about that, too. I would think that it should be built into the client, with a function that triggers a ‘sudo halt’ or similar. But that necessitates a manual restart of the system, though.

I now have two raspyfi setups, one for the living room and really good sound, one for the kitchen and very good sound, considering it is impossibe to place speakers correctly and using cheap components.

I have a third Raspi, I could turn that into a NAS, but I would like to have it to play around with. So I am thinking of setting the kitchen device up as a server also. It will be a rare occurence that the two devices will be demanding data at the same time, so I hope performance will not suffer too much.

Another feature that would be really nice is the possiblity to sync two or more Raspyfi units to play the same music in multiple rooms, I can easily see this spreading to all rooms in the house, and then syncing will be essential when.

  I tried as well to turn raspberry to a dac, but I gave up ’cause with lot of load on the Pi (lot of write\read) I was ending with SD card corrupted in few days… So I took a old laptop and trasformed it to a nas, it works definetely better! I placed openmediavault on it and it works perfect! Take a look here:

    I have been sparing some thoughts on the multiroom setup over the last few days, making some notes, once I get them organised a bit, I will post them in the forum.
    
    I am wondering if it would be better to apply control of MPD from the outside, sort of building a new client as the ones that already exist, ‘just’ adding features that let you control more than one unit at a time. And then the synch problem must be addressed, of course.
    
    I will also try to find what solutions other people have come up with, might as well be ‘inspired’ by stuff that already works.

  Hello, nsp. Unfortunately the sd image of Rc1 got somehow corrupted… Lot of users report your same issue. You can try the RaspyFi alpha, the quality is slightly lower but it has full apt-get functionality. In next releases I’ll let the locale packages installed.
