This is the Raspberry Pi USB DAC support list, it’s made thanks to all the feedbacks sent by our users. You can actively contribute to make this list even more comprehensive by submitting your feedback. Please note, that since RaspyFi is directly based on Raspbian these are supported dacs on Raspberry Pi as well, so you can take this as a Raspberry Pi usb Dac compatibility list!

Please report in the comments below if your device is working or not, so we can set up a comprehensive list of supported\unsupported Raspberry Pi USB DAC.
This table lists the device’s DAC and USB Receiver, if it works in asynchronous mode, if it’s capable of Hardware Mixing (with Hardware Mixing you can control remotely the volume without quality degradation) and the Maximum Resolution it is capable of.
You can also check out our USB DAC suggestions if you wish to get a Raspberry PI Supported DAC. or submit yours on comments.

Has anyone developped a way to communicate with apple airport express or airplay-powered device. I’m using a hi-end wifi streamer, and believe the quality is much better than anything wired, but it only works with Airplay and I’m looking for a better solution than carrying my macbook pro to play music.

It also works with Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6. Just plug in the USB, reboot the Pi and select ‘C2′ as Audi output.
To return to jack or HDMI, simply unplug and reboot…

A Lexicon Alpha on the standard distro of Raspbmc works. There are some “artifacts” and I guess that’s from the lack of bandwith. Otherwise the sound is clear. I’ve powered the Lexicon via an USB hub. It will also work via the onboard USB port, but a 2A PSU isn’t enough and I got random reboots.

I’ve just bough an Exposure DAC 2010s2 and it does work BUT with full of cracks, making the listening experience really poor. Does anybody knows if it could be a complete incompatibility between the dac and raspyfi? Or is it just a lack of fine-tunning configuration of the raspyfi? Thanks!

I have been troubleshooting no sound for days . I may have made a mistake in buying Behringer Uca 200 from E-Bay. I see on the list that 202 works with Raspyfi.

I’m in the tough debate of selecting a DAC. My choices are Arcam irDAC vs Micromega myDAC. I can get the myDAC for 300e, irDAC for 350. Are there any real reasons to pick one or another comparing their features?

I have NAD 356BEE amplifier with integrated DAC module. NAD states it is an asynchronous DAC. When I am starting to listen, i get lots of clicks in the sound, so I found this configuration quite unusable for the moment. What do I think about this:
1. It is a well known problem with USB packet loss (though I’m listening simple 44/16 tracks);
2. Asynchronous mode doesn’t work well because my DAC is not supported.

  I have the NAD375BEE with the DAC2.0 module and have the same symptoms. The sound is almost fine at 44100/16, but the higher you push the bitrate the more clicking sounds are present. Very unfortunate.

I just put in the trash Rasbian+squeezeplug as my dac didn’t want to work with it at all, I fighted for a month now and lost my confidence of using the Pi as a player, until I stumbled upon Raspyfy.

Worked first try for my DAC! it’s EMU 0404 USB with good old AK4396
I had to use the trick of copying *.elf files to be able to boot on the Raspyfy 1.0 though.
Currently I’ve only tested 24bit 44.1Hz radio tracks, but as soon as I receive the powersupply for my external HD, I’ll test higher sampling rates flacs that I have.

  All other frequencies sound distorted. Officially it’s Async USB but due to the issues in changing frequencies I suppose it’s not using true Async mode.

Does anyone here have experience with the Woo Audio WA7?

I’m thinking of upgrading (currently use a Schiit Bifrost/Asgard combo) my setup, but am unsure about the WA7′s DAC being supported. The specs page says it employs the C-Media 6631 USB chip, which seems to be the the same as the one in my Bifrost and supposedly works according to your compatibility chart. The DAC chip is the TI PCM5102A which, according to the your chart, works on the HiFace DAC.

Advice is appreciated, since the WA7 is (for me) a considerable investment. Thanks in advance.

I connected a pair of Nubert nuPro A-20 speakers. Nubert says they use a Micronas UAC3556B. It works fine but the “hardmix” volume control adjusts the bass, not the volume. I ran some 24 bit / 320 kbps tracks, but I don’t know how to test the maximum “resolution”.

I read about problems concerning the device being recognized on several operating systems. That issue should be fixed by now according the manufacturer.

But I wonder if anyone can confirm that this newer device works on Raspberry Pi / RaspyFi

I hope someone doesn’t think this is a stupid question – Linux is definitely my thing but I am no audiophile… I know the purpose of a USB DAC card is to give better audio reproduction than using the internal the internal sound chips of the Pi (or indeed any PC board) but are the phono outputs of these types of USB DAC devices digital or analogue? I’d like to turn one of my Pi’s into a music server and have a Cambridge Audio music amp that has aux and phono input connections, but no optical or digital inputs. I’m thinking of the Behringer UCA202 as my first step into this area as it’s cheap on Amazon but the illustration on there shows phono cables connected to it marked as “Digital”. The description of the item doesn’t specifically state analogue or digital outputs on the UCA202. Can anyone advise please?

  DAC is an abbreviation for Digital to Analog Converter, i.e. digital input through USB, RCA, SPDIF or other contacts/standards and analog output through RCA or XLR connectors. As you can see, RCA connectors can be used for both analog and digital signals.

  Hi i own an UCA202, it has one pair analog RCA audio input, one pair analog RCA audio out, one optical out, (maybe spdif, or toslink, i’ve never use it) and a headphone jack. You can use it as an A/D converter, to record from the input, and can play from USB and input simultaneously.

After adding madfuload (http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/raspberrypi#audio_software_repository), the M-audio Transit works well in 16/44.1 & 16/48 in async mode. Hardware volume (hardmix?) also works. Nice to get it working, since it lay unused in the bin.

Working great with Meridian Explorer using Rc2 and usb audio fix patch. I’m currently using Mopidy for streaming from Spotify but I’m unable to stream in 24/192. Maybe I need some tweaking of Mopidy config file. I’m able to stream in max res using other software.

    You’re right. Max output res using spotify is 320kbps wich is faar from 8.9Mbps needed to stream at max resolution of 24/192 2ch. I’m doing some tests with several sample high res flac files, just to see if this Dac behaves as expected…

Simaudio Moon 100D working fine. Not sure which receiver but it’s only 16/32-48. DAC is Burr-Brown PCM1793. Not async.

  Ok you can add the Meridian Explorer to the list. I don’t think the few sound issues I have had are related to the DAC it’s the limitation of the Raspberry Pi and NAS streaming of 24bit files.

      Well, out of the box it works, yes, but cannot use my WaveIO Asynchronous USB-to-I2S interface.
      Is there something I shoud know, I hear sound from the Raspberry audio out jack.
      I should also add that Internet radio is a bit tricky to use.

        When you plug a new USB device, you should reboot. So plug the Wave-Io, then start the PI. This should work. If it doesn’t paste the output of

        Using mpod app is impossible. I resolved adding them manually using the Gnome Music Player Client to the ‘now playing playlist’ and from the mpod saving to a new playlist. Or should I use directly mpc ?

        No it doesn’t work.
        And it’s extremely instable, sometimes the mpod app loses connection with the mpd server.
        I don’t think it’s my power supply.

Hey, I’ve got a trends ud-10 usb to spif plugged into a ezdac (DIY). It’s just 16 bit. I guess it should work. I’ll give it a go as soon as I get raspyfi on a sd card.

I can confirm that the Audio Sector NOS USB DAC by Peter Daniel works no issues straight out of the box. Probably of interest as it was/still is both a commercial product and sold as a kit to DIY hifi enthusiasts. Has the PCM2706 USB interface and TDA1543 DAC IC.

The FiiO E17 Alpen FiiO dock combo works great, plays 24/96 files with standard kernel.
Also tried up to 24/192 flac files, but I think the maximum input on the E-17 via USB is 24/96, so the signal in the display stays on 24/96.

My VDAC II works with the USB fix, only had some stability issues after applying the fix, which ended up corrupting my SD card. Could be power-source or other periferall issue, once I get my ’5V 2A ModMyPi USB Power Supply’ setup I’ll test again.

  Just bought the meridian explorer and tried it on my pi running raspbmc and it does play but clicks and pops consistently. Same experience with my sg tab 2. So don’t get it. Although i just bought a Asus memo and the explorer works flawlessly.

      Yesterday I did read up on the USB patch but it wouldn’t update my firmware while on Raspbmc. A few articles stated that Raspbmc uses a specific kernal and firmware with there versions and with releases of new Raspbmc versions it will update the Pi as well. So I downloaded RaspyFi and I will give it a shot. The main thing I am hoping for is running my 24-192 tracks thru it. Wish me luck. I’ll let you know if I get it going so we can get it on the supported list.

      Well I got it up and running and I did the USB patch. The sound is still very distorted. Lots of crackling. On any file. MP3/Flac and All formats. Does anyone have a successful setup with the Meridian Explorer yet?

      Ok here is my write up. Used the Beta and yes it is much better I can play most of my media with much less distortion from my NAS. The only thing I need to use for my 24-192 files is the Ram option and that is 99% still the occasional crack or pop. So in final thought is that in order to play the media I have I may not be able to use a NAS and will have to be USB????

        Yes this cleaned it up. Thanks for all your help. Very happy with Raspyfi. And it definitively did the trick because the media I was loading was a pretty small selection during my tests so the DB load would not have been a factor. The Auto.nas script you got me to use was the difference.

I have tried RC2 with my HRT Music Streamer II. It works, but there are almost constant clicks and pops. This is with mp3 and FLAC formats, 44.1k (I can’t test other formats as they aren’t working with RC2).

I am running the Pi from an iPad charger supply, so I think there should be enough power for the Pi and the Music Streamer, but I don’t have a powered hub to test further.

Files are on a USB memory stick directly connected to the Pi. The problem might be overloading the USB controller, but given the clicks and pops happen just as much with the low data rate mp3 files, maybe not.

Any ideas, anyone? Any more data I can provide to help track down the problem?

Confirmed RC2 working on an Edirol / Roland / Cakewalk UA25. Must be adjusted via back switch to operate at 48Khz. 44Khz or 96Khz sound terribly.

        I don’t know if it makes any difference, but just for info the MDAC (reports as S24_3LE) will only play 24 bit under a standard windows environment, but can be forced to do 16bit via Kernel Streaming or WASAPI/ASIO.

Hi,

Audiolab M-DAC connected via USB does not work out of the box. Very distorted sound, if you listen carefully you can just about hear the song that is being played but basically unusable.

Note that I have only tried this with an iPhone PSU (1A 5v) and the MDAC plugged direct into the RPi. It may be that an active hub or a better PSU could help. Note though that the MDAC is async which seems to tally with a lot of the others that don’t work?

I will try my spare V-link II (also async) and DacMagic III (not async) tomorrow, see if they work and report back. Great idea, just hope I can get it working

    So… the v-link II (async USB) has the same problems as the MDAC (async USB). Completely unlistenable playback, very distorted My Cambridge Audio DacMagic III however is a big step forward but with complete drop outs every 2 seconds or so. I wonder whether that’s something to do with power (e.g. fixed by a better PSU/Active hub – any ideas?)
    
    In terms of your request see below. It looks like the format for both async DACs is defaulting to 24 bit, I can confirm that when playing through the MDAC the MDAC display confirms 24bit/44.1khz. Note I am forcing USB 1.1 in all cases.

The Fostex HP-A3 seems to work fine, though it’s a little underpowered as far as I can tell since I was sent a 1A PSU by a seller instead of a 1.5A one.

    No editing on mine, simply plug it in to the Pi and it should work. I am using a 5V 1A linear power supply. I did have problems with switching power supplies, specifically a Blackberry PS. The Apple 1A charger worked fine. As admin suggested try a different PS. If you can get a 2.1A tablet charger try that.

Schiit Bifrost update: earlier comment re glitches or stumbles resolved. Was a power supply issue. I tried a 2.1A RCA power supply and the stumbles and glitches went away. So, Schiit Bifrost 100% compatible.

    Sound quality is surprisingly good. After many years of succumbing to temptation when I really should not have I am lucky enough to be able to compare the RaspyFi on several DACs. The Schiit Bifrost, a Muse Mini 24/192 board, the uDac2, a Moon DA-100 and a Bel Canto DAC3. Haven’t yet tried RaspyFi on the Moon or Bel Canto. Of the other three it’s interesting – the Bifrost is an async DAC with, of course, it’s own power supply and has more ‘heft’ than the Raspi- powered Muse and uDAC. Overall, I prefer the Bifrost but there is a ‘rightness’ to the little Muse that is surprising given it’s price.
    
    Will get around to trying the other DACs eventually but I like seeing how close a ‘mini-system’ can get to a bigger, more expensive system. Currently I am using the Raspi with the Muse board into a Trends TA-10.1 Tripath amp. It puts a grin on your face to fit an entire system (except the speakers)in one hand! If you started today you could put together a surprisingly good system for under USD$150 not including speakers. The Raspi is U$35, a Muse MC20 Class T amp is about U$50 and the Muse Mini 24/192 DAC (the one with the two RCA jacks sandwiched in the center by two LEDs) is U$55. Very decent sound for the dollar. AND remote control!!
    
    Compared to my Voyage MPD Alix 2D2 SBC the only thing the Raspyfi lacks is the ability to see all the files on my NAS (it only sees about 10% of the albums) and the inability to play hi-res files. I understand you’re working on both though so I will wait patiently!!

Ok, I did some research on one of the devices I’m looking at, the Violectric V800.
It uses a Burr Brown PCM1792, a Burr Brown SRC4392 and the Interface is a TE 7022 L.
Any thoughts about it working…?

  Hi taurui, for sure it will work! Te 7022l is reported to be working, it is the same receiver as the odac.
  The receiver chip is the one who determines if a dac is working or not. Please let me know the sonic results!

  No, only working dacs. Your point is right, I’ll add non working dacs. Until now, with raspyFi, the audio stream has to be resampled at 44,1\16 .

    I have tried two dacs that work under 441/16
    1. Audiotrak Opto play
    2. Diyeden svdac05
    These Dacs sound smoothly without clicking (even between tracks) but have to set the format statement 44100:14:2 in mpd.conf file. White noise happens if the statement is unmarked and play music beyond CD’s sampling rate.

I’ve tried with a Musical fidelity V-DAC II. It works, but with a lot of a scratches.

I use a NAS mounted as an nfs filesystem and I’ve tried with wifi connection, power lan connection and cable connection with the same result.

Using my notebook in same conditions I had good results, with no scratches and good sound.

I’ve noticed that scratches are “in time” with the power lan’s blinking leds, so I think that is something network related.

I’ve also tried with a standard raspbian SD, with the same problems.

The sound from standard audio of PI is OK.

I’m on the lookout for a new DAC anyway (It’ll probably be a shootout between the DacMagic Plus, Audiolab M-DAC and Violectric V800 … maybe also the Schiit Gungnir and/or Rega DAC).
Any thoughts about these ones, do I have a chance of compatibility?

Hi – this is just the project I have been looking for. It looks great and I can’t wait to get started. Is there any indication that the Audioquest Dragonfy (http://www.audioquest.com/usb_digital_analog_converter/dragonfly-dac) would work? I have just purchased one and think it’s excellent. Would make a great combo with the Raspberry, if only for the tiny footprint.
Any thoughts on this?

This morning I emailed Stan Beresford to see if they are planning on bringing out a new USB DAC in the near future.
Less than an hour later I received a response to day that they are currently awaiting CE approvals for a new USB DAC.
Having heard such good things from the previous Beresford range from reviews and a friend who uses a Caiman I’d be very interested to know whether it would be compatible. However, not having owned a DAC before and generally not being very knowledgeable on the subject I wouldn’t know what to ask. Don’t suppose someone could impart such knowledge upon me or perhaps even email the man themselves?

      Why don’t you get more than 44.1 with the Pi? all the job is done by the dac (no resampling on my A10 and surely the Pi), usb2 is doing the trick to reach 192 KHz.

This is awesome, and so simple, I just plugged everything in and it worked with my Fiio E-10 sounds pretty good to me! Just thinking about how I use this in the car, just need to get wifi working, so I can use Mpod on my iphone as the remote. Would that be possible?

  Yeah that could be definetely possible. You can use a simple mobile phone charger to power it, then install a wi-fi dongle and set it up. I’ll post a tutorial on this as well.
  You’ll need a usb hub, ’cause you need at least 3 usb ports. 1 for the wi-fi dongle, 1 for usb-dac and 1 for music storage. It will easily fit on your armrest storage! Let me know!
