Hi everyone,
I have this crazy project, I need someone to tell me "dont do it".
I want to put the Pi, DAC and amplifier in the same box.
Inputs would be:
1) 110V
2) wifi
3) Pot for volume, switch for on-off
4) (optional) RCA inputs)
Outputs would be
1) speakers output for a pair of speakers.
—————————--
First thing first, should I order a Pi to do this, or wait for something better such as the beaglebone?
1) Computer: Raspberry Pi Model B + USB dongle with chipset Realtek RTL8188cus. Power input : 5V, 700mA
2) DAC combo:
xmos2 (Power input : 5V USB or external
i2s dac sabre 902 (Regulated or Unregulated 6~20Vdc/31mA.)
3) Amp: HifiMeDIY T1 ALPS (TK2050 based, 2x 100W @ 8 ohm) http://hifimediy.com/index.php…..duct_id=54
4) Power supply for amp : SMPS300R 38V 110V (110V input , output 38V DC, 300w) http://hifimediy.com/index.php…..duct_id=69
5) Case GDCH005 http://www.mafaudio.com/pro/Re…..spx?id=508
—————--
Cost
1) 53$ with sd card and dongle and shipping
2) 40$ + 68$ shipped from ebay and diyinhk.com
3) and 4) 59$ + 55$ + 22$ shipping from hifimediy.com
5) 36$ + 30$ shipping
——————
363$, excluding power supply for PI, XMOS and DAC.
Question:
a)Is this worth it?
b) is the Pi worthy of the other components or should I get a different brain for this?
c) what is the best way to power PI, XMOS and DAC? Should I get aDC-DC converter and feed it from the 38V output by the SMPS300R ?
d) placeholder for more .. )
Do it!
Then, wait, the Pi isn't the best thing for this… If you are patient, in a month you could have a very nice surprise… And I mean very nice… I shouldn't have tell but…
Then for the Power supply, look at this:

And if I can suggest, if you can find one go with Icepower… And add a nice preamp… That would mean heaven..
I'm afraid I didnt manage to cancel my order for 2 Pi I had sent yesterday. Bah, I'll just try to pass it on to others folks for different projects.
Regarding the powersupply, I'd rather not pay 100$ for that. I could go the DIY route like you did. If I do, just I go
a) 110V AC--> 12V AC (transformer)- -> 5V DC (LT3080),
or b) 110V AC --> 38V DC (SMPS300R) --> 5V DC (LM78xx or LM317) ?
Regarding the pre-amp, I'm not sure what gain they provide over going straight from DAC to Amp?
I've just googled the Icepower amps, they seem nice but I'm not sure how to get them..

however now I want to know what the surprise is!!
My guess is that it's the first release for the Beaglebone Black

thanks for the link!
specs say 2x50W into 4 ohms.
my speakers are 8 ohms. need to change anything?
thanks!

If it drives 4ohms, 8 ohms should not be a problem at all. Cheers!
thanks!
What do you think of this DAC by DIYINHK?
http://www.diyinhk.com/shop/ho…..lator.html
Seems very similar to the one you recommended, it's much cheaper , accepts 5V input and has mounting holes.
Or you could try one of these http://www.profusionplc.com/pr…..amplifiers
I am currently listening to the ALC0180-2300. 50 W/ch into 8 ohms, power supply on board. Sounds excellent with the MAD. These are "2nd generation" Class D amps, apparently a step up from the ICE amps. One of the senior engineers from B&O left to form this company. The "third generation" are apparently made by a company called Pascal and are reportedly the heart of Jeff Rowland's new series ams. Also believed to power the M3 class D-Sonic amps although they aren't admitting to it!
Unfortunately, it does not appear that the Pascal amps are as yet available to us mere mortals (anyone knowing where to source single lot quantities PLEASE reply) but the Anaview/Abletec models available from Profusion are amazing value for money – the one I tried was US$101. Not bad for a 90w/ch into 4ohms stereo board complete with power supply onboard. You won't be disappointed with the SQ. Don't forget to order the connector kit and also email them re alternative shipping arrangements if DHL is not yur cup of tea.
Regarding the preamp – the MAD DAC outputs 2V RMS. More than enough to drive almost any modern solid state amp to max output nowadays. So you don't really need a gain stage preamp. You simply won't use gain. A simple 10k stereo volume pot will work just fine. That's how I'm currently using my MAD with the ALC0180-2300 power amp. Works fine.
For truly state-of-the-art sound you could try a Slagle autoformer instead of the volume pot. Not cheap but arguably no better way to go if you have a low-impedance 2V RMS source and a modern high impedance SS amp.
