Ya I guess I could have spent a bit more and just bought a all in one player but that would not have been as much fun.
Besides most of the gear has more then one purpose/use outside of the build.
I still also need to use my phone as the controller on what is in the playlist over it's hotspot which isn't bad. I kind of like it. More of just a wireless remote.
One thing I would like to improve is the over all boot times. The only improvement I could see there is with the sections where that ISC Internet Systems Consortium system starts pinging the eth0 and wlan0 if that could be eliminated since it is useless. The WIFI doesn't work anyways until wicd starts in the end anyways.
I have a new case on order hoping to cleanup the build a bit. But this works as is.
Could you share some details of 5000mAh external battery pack. Is it powering the dac as well?
And how you are connecting the battery to the pi – Also, what kind of a playback time you are getting. Thanks!
I am powering the Powered USB hub with the External Battery.
Pi is powered from the USB hub to the Pi power in
USB Wifi on the Hub
DAC powered from the Hub
USB 16gig Thumb drive on USB1 of the PI
USB hub Connected to the USB2 on the PI
The Powered Hub requires a 5V 2A power source so I created my own cable to go from the Powered 2.1a out on the external battery to the male DC power plug for the HUB
The 5000mAh gets me 8+ hours of playing time and it's been quite stable. No drops on any of the connected items.
The External battery has a 1a and a 2.1a out but only the 2.1a is used.
I also have a 12v cable for when I am in the vehicle which has the same male DC power plug for the HUB.
New Case came in and I cleaned up the build quite a bit by putting the powered hub in the PI case with the PI.
