Hi All,
i dig that most of you are very good at soldering, sealing, etc, etc.
But I guarantee you a lot of non DIY folks will love to get a system working on the raspfi.
Can you help us to get a good setup without too much DIY involved?
This is were i am now:
1) Raspfi installed in the PI: all software, no sweating
2) Power supply: standard one is no good. Need suggestion for something better and ready-to-go
3) DAC: great post on the site. I'll go for the Shiit one
4) Amp: couldn't find a reference on the site for an assembled amp say around 100euro ? Maybe a DAC/amp combined? Or maybe amp speakers?
My aim is to build a complete Raspfi system with nearly-ready to go components with a cost of 350 euro max.
Thanks for you help!
2 – Take a loot at this thing: https://www.modmypi.com/New-Link-4-Port-USB-Hub-(USB-2.0-with-Mains-Adaptor)
It has been in use here for almost a week now, no problems. I admint that's not that long. But it is designed for the Pi, so I expect it to be better than a €8 knock-off usb adapter.
3 – The Schiit is a very nice and neat little DAC. Quality is very good and it hardly consumes any power.
4 – Amp depends on what speakers you're planning to use (don't forget that speakers together with your acoustics are the most important factor, not the amp!). I wouldn't use an amp with built-in DAC. Firstly because it might not work correctly with RapsyFi and secondly because the amps with built-in dacs in this pricerange just aren't good. They will play, but they are not as well-built.
The tri-path amps Icai linked are upcoming. I have never tried one myself but I am very interested in the development of these small, low-energy-consumption yet powerful amps.
Another alternative is to buy an old amp from the late '70. Those are built like tanks, maybe you can find a DIY'er to check it for you. But for about €100,- you can have an amplifier of high-end quality. (I spent €200,- on mine, including a revision. It has been playing happily for five years now and soundwise it compares to modern amps of €1500-2000.)
I second PaulM's opinion on speakers and the idea to buy a secondhand amplifier:
I use two setups they where not made in the 70's but end 80's and 90's:
1: Rega Luna amp, (100 euro second hand) and Rega EL8 speakers (120 euro second hand including revision)
2: Sugden A25 amp (bought 125 euro second hand 7 years ago) and CASTLE Richmond 7i speakers (240 euro second hand)
Both these sets sound and made high-end quality
Hi All and thanks for your replies.
After a lot of reading around, i've put together my first order for a raspify setup.
Once again, the goal was to build an entry level Pi based system for 350 euro max.
1) Pi rev.b with Tp-Link TL-WN725N 150 Mbps Wireless N Nano USB Adapter
2) Hifimediy Sabre USB DAC 2 with external power supply (no need to change the one on the Pi)
3) Scythe Kama Bay AMP 2000 Rev B : 10w only but raving reviews
4) Cambridge audio s30 speakers
I'm really exited to put all this together. I will let you know the listening results
Looks good!!! I think u will like the Hifimediy Sabre USB DAC 2, I own 3 of the little one''s they sound excellent and work perfect with Raspify and Squeezelite!!!
I would better go with a tripath 2024 amp…
Like this for example:

Or if you are in diy mood, I definetely suggest this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-X-15…..19d55678c5
And mod it like that:
http://www.justblair.co.uk/Sur…..t-mod.html
http://www.justblair.co.uk/Sur…..mod-2.html
http://www.justblair.co.uk/sur…..ds-ii.html
http://www.justblair.co.uk/Sur…..art-1.html
And place two Jantzen 2,2uF caps on the line… It's worth it… Really. But you should be experienced (also because the layout of these boards changes a lot…
And for the wi-fi, I recommend the Edimax one…

I picked up one of those 2 X 15Watt Class D Audio Amplifier Board – TA2024. It just arrived and I've got it running. It's quite impressive. I think I'll listen to it for a while and then do the mods or better yet get a couple of them so I can do A/B testing to see what I think of the before after results.
