Loving it so far!
Had a bit of a shaky start when my SD card reader refused to believe that my card wasn't write-protected. I had to dismantle the reader and force two contacts together with a pin, then hold the pin there while I wrote the data… but it worked
Setup with the new system on my wired LAN took hardly any time at all. Went to settings, added the required info for my network share (needed IP instead of server name, not really a problem though) and then it just worked. And I'm happy to report that I'm no longer getting crackles and pops over the LAN, yay! I also like the OS controls to reboot, restart the service and shut down. Saves ever having to start up PuTTY. Which is good for us lazy people.
Excellent work, huge thanks to the whole team!
Cheers,
Karli
Well Done!
Ironically, it was just Friday night that I started thinking about finally prototyping a Raspberry Pi based music appliance. I'm well acquainted with electronics, computers, scripting, etc… but I've never had a Raspberry Pi so I'm really a "newb" with all of this and I planned to buy one on Saturday.
My goal is to use a Raspberry Pi for each zone and use a web interface to control them. I had no idea what work was being done in this arena but I figured there must be a bunch of people who had thought of this and with a few searches on Google, I'd find them. Later that night I found the RaspyFi site but this was before the release of RaspyFi 1.0 so I was counting on using a beta or RC version and I had no idea what I was to find when I returned from the electronics store on Saturday.
Saturday night, armed with my new Pi, I learned of the release of RaspyFi 1.0 but I still had no idea what to expect because I wasn't around for the alpha/beta testing, bug reports, etc… I formatted and wrote the RaspyFi image onto a Verbatim 4Gb class 10 card, plugged it in, fired it up and watched the network lights light up; literally my first experience with a Raspberry Pi and RaspyFi and it looked like it might be working. I pointed my web browser to http://raspyfi.local and sure enough, it was working and I could use web radio right out of the box (I don't have a samba NAS yet). I've edited the Web Radio share and added a few favorite stations and it works better than I could have hoped.
The Web GUI is awesome! I'm a web developer by day and I really appreciate the work that's been put into the interface. It's simple, it works and it's worked well on all the devices I've tried it on (Win/Mac/iPhone).
The Mpod app seems to work well and hooked up on first try.
I don't have a DAC yet but I'll look around and get the one that works best with RaspyFi.
Anyway, I have to get back to poking around my new RaspyFi but I wanted to say thanks.

Hey,
I had bought a cheap DAC and it worked without any extra config with Raspyfi
http://www.aliexpress.com/item…..4231845404
I ran it today and the web interface looks great. Having trouble mounting my NAS, but I think it may be because of dodgy SD card. I'm getting an errer (mmc0: Timeout waiting for hardware interrupt – cmd13). After googling, it seems to be a common problem with Kingston cards.
I'll have to find another card to run it on before I start trying to fix any problems.
I got internet radio playing and also music that I had stored on the SD card and it works great. Looking forward to spending more time on it over the next while.
The problem you mentioned is nothing serious.. also normal we can say..
The NAS should mount fine, just refresh the page and the red cross should turn green… Let me know!

Hey, that looks like a very cheap option for a DAC. What does it use for analog outputs? Is that a mini-stereo 1/8" out?
While I'm trying to figure out my DAC solution, I'm using the Raspberry Pi out through an attenuator into a couple of mono-blocks and it sounds better than I expected. That little unit would suffice while I figure out what I'm going to use in the long run.

That's actually a 1/4 standard headphone jack. Very compact! Its sturdy enough, but I image could be damaged if not handled lightly.
There's also an optical out and another output – maybe RCA? Powered by a slightly bigger USB port that you would find on a printer.
It uses the PCM2704 which is widely reported to be Pi-friendly, so you can find similar DACs on ebay.
Wanted to share my first impressions!! Because the updating of my library took 13 hours over SMB Nas i couldn't wat any longer and began testing during the updating. I Previously used the beta version with a HifiMeDiy Sabre USB DAC. And playing thrue the updating process was not an option because it gave pops and clicks in the sound. In the end I always had some clicks and pops in my sound with the beta version also in idle mode. And now with the new verion everything plays perfect!!! even during the updating process. In my setup it looks like all the bugs are gone and i have a perfect musicplayer that I wan't to use as a multi room setup in the furure!!! Thanks for all the good work.
p.s. i did have some hickups when using airplay but this could be related because i was still updating my library. I will look into this this evening. But i love the fact that Raspyfi has the airplay function!!!
First off – Hats off for a fantastic 1.0. It was well worth the wait. I noted one bug and one issue (maybe)
1. Wi-fi . After running wicd curses or natively running the wifi config using web gui, wi-fi does not work. In fact, raspyfi takes a lot of time to boot once the wi-fi dongle is connected. Lan works fine. The usb wifi dongle (comfast) was working with beta
2. Volume. I am using m2tech hiface 2 and yamaha receiver. I feel the volume is on the lower side (as compared to the previous versions)
Outside of that, this is just a great piece work. Just blow away!
Keep up the good work!

My dongle didn't work with beta but it does now. (had to use wicd curses to get it going though). I agree that it does take a long time to boot with the wifi starting up until last.

Shouldn't it be outputing at the maximum volume since it's bit perfect? Could it be your imagination?

Even with wicd, I cant get it to work. The long boot time seems something to do with trying to find DHCP settings or something of that sort (cant decode the msgs i see on the screen)

I am pretty sure its not my imagination. However, I will confirm it with a new Dac/ or SPDIF combo soon.

Thanks for the info… I've ordered one from AliExpress along with the WiFI dongle. This should keep me happy for a while I suspect.
I love the RaspyFi so far really much.
A couple of things i noticed:
PROS:
- It's better than my cd player (h as a stable platter) with FLAC
- Even without DAC, the simple audio out sounds already really easy going. Misses punch, but so far so good!
- The interface is quite good and works well (from a professional pov; since i'm a FE developer with mobile expertise )
CONS:
- WiFi didn't work out of the box (and I actually mean the program wasn't found. I installed v1.0)
- Something to do with the NAS perhaps, but it has troubles playing 24Bit FLAC's.
- Addition to the previous cons; I miss the buffer status (like on a youtube movie). Particulary handy with huge audio files. I don't know until what part it wil buffer it atm.
(These last two points can be a network problem, but I haven't figured it out. Might be the bad NIC in the NAS..which is planned to be replaced)
- MPD remote (MPoD) doesn't work really well..it hangs a bit…
Some ideas i've had.
- On the basis of various posts, tutorials and suggestions for DAC. I want to build a raspberry pi + dac + headphone amp set. Together in one hifi-deck looking case. I'm still exploring the possibilities. I haven't had a lot of experience with DIY at all…but it's enormously tempting to start. I really love this project. My ex-audiophile hobby sparks a little bit. This time more research & fact based .
So.. -> Pi -> l2s -> dac -> headphones amp
Wifi connection (I need a new pi, because atm, mine has issues with the LAN. it goes UP, but with all distro's..I've never gotten it working more than twice ).
I really do not want to spend 100 euros + for a PSU. Even tho they might be audiophile.
Thanks for the great work so far.

Had to come post this…
I downloaded Raspyfi on Friday afternoon and had the whole thing working, connected to NAS share and controlling with MPDroid 10 mins later. It's amazing how simple it was. I'm using the analog out from the pi to a receiver pushing my gameroom speakers. We had tunes all night, no hiccups.
Very pleased with this!
With all the positive feedback on how easy things are, it might just be my raspberry pi which has problems

Same here, Boot time on wifi is very slow. I used the raspberry pi with it default linux dist' and it took much less to boot (Say, between 30 seconds to a minute), Now it's more like 3-5 minutes.
Everything else is great. Thanks.
Finally got a chance to try this yesterday.
(reminder – image on 4GB card using Rev 1 Pi B, wired ethernet, 5.25V 2A PSU, hiface2, Rega DAC)
Plugged in and booted up
Tried configuring NAS via webgui, but unsuccessful
Copied across Nas line from /etc/auto.nas that I was using in the Beta (I'll get back with the differences)
Rebooted
Working.
Need to play with the webgui to discover what I can do with it, but so far very impressed.
Only slight problem I've noticed so far is a slight click if I swap to a different track when one is playing.
