I cannot tell from the project description – will this distro allow me to stream usb audio digital out through the usb output on the RPi? Something which can be sent to a downstream HiFace 2 for SPDIF conversion before sending to the DAC? I\'m not interested in analog out, or anything that uses the onboard RPi DAC. Thanks for the help.

Yes, this is the main goal of this distribution! Sorry for not being clear. Could you please tell me which description (on this site) was unclear? (so I'll correct it).
The Hi-face 2 is on the compatibility list, some user however reports some clicks and noise. Try it and tell me how it works for you. With RaspyFi you will stream your audio files to the Hiface and feed a dac. Let me know!

It would be clearer to me at least if you sepcify specifcally – digital USB audio 2.0 out, for downstream, outboard DAC. (I assume there conversion is needed for S/PDIF support). You reference BitPerfect audio reproduction but that could also mean a number of things. There descriptions I see don't contain specifics.
That being said, now that I know the scope, I will get out an unused SD card and try this right away. I was intending on running HDMI digital audio out through a NAD M51 DAC that I will audition, but no need to spend $2000 on that if I can stream lossless USB audio out!

I would like to add a comment regarding bitperfect output.
In multiple post on this forum and elsewhere the claim bitperfect output is used if the bit depth and the sample rate of the output is the same as the input file (e.g. 16/44.1 in and 16/44.1 out). This only means that the file is not re-sampled. If a file is re-sampled it is not bitperfect anymore, however there are multiple other manipulations that can happen in the background that result in playback no longer being bitperfect.
The absence of re-sampling alone does not mean that the playback is bitperfect.
In addition to re-sampling any volume control, DSP use, equalizers, limiters, crossfaders, clipping protection or fade in and fade out steps will result in changing the input file bits and unless we are sure that this is not the case we cannot be sure that the output is bitperfect.
Not using / installing these features does not guarantee that fact that RaspyFi is minimalistic with regards to filtering etc.
The best test would be to playback a reference file to a DAC equiped with a bitperfect test. The DAC contains the same file and compares the input it receives from the playback source to the reference file. One DAC that I know has this feature is the Audiolab MDAC.

Does anyone have this DAC and a RasPi with RaspyFi who could test this?
I currently have an optimized Win7 system and have ordered a RasPi and will compare the SQ between the two. However I do not have the MDAC.

I've got the Audiolab M dac and unfortunately it doesn't work with raspyfi. At least I've not got it to work.
The M dac shows a flushing buffer message and stutter constantly.
At the moment I feed it via an airport express – which sounds great and passes the bit perfect test as mentioned above, but I'd love to get it working with the raspberry pi so that I can control the m dac s volume directly, and maybe get the benifit of less jitter with a usb async connection.
Anyone had any luck with this dac?
