Has ntp and ntpd been turned off in the raspyfi release (downloaded from soreceforge, release dated 14/5/2013)? And where's the best place to turn it back on?

I've been using raspyfi for a few days now, very pleased with it. It too a LOT longer than ten minutes to set up! I'm very rusty on linux stuff, and I had to rewrite the image onto the SD card a few times after ruining it and locking myself out.

I'm making music through the analogue jack atm, my usb dac is ordered from dealextreme, but I don't expect to see it for a few weeks… Still sounds OK on medieval stuff, and horrible on Buckethead! The 11 bit quantization becomes very obvious.

My r-pi is hard wired to my network, not wifi, so do I still need wicd? Can I turn it off? Or is it still needed for wired network stuff?

Well, if it is needed for the wired ethernet, I'll leave it alone. ntpd is useful for keepng the date correct, otherwise my raspyfi always thinks it's February when it wakes up (when you updated/released the distribution I'm using?). It is installed, just not running in the raspyfi distro.

Problems with setting up raspyfi: me being rusty on unix is the worst. I first ran into unix back as an undergraduate in 1978. I've used it several times in several places ever since, but it's never been my favourite os. I was wasting a lot of time trying to get samba connections to several windows computers working, since there are many places in my network where music can be found. I was hoping to get a nameserver going, since all these windows computers have dhcp ip addresses and I didn't want to have to give them all static ip's in the fstab. But even something as simple as spaces in the windows folder name slowed me down (replace with backslash040, btw, if anyone is wondering, in the fstab, but other places can just use the whole folder name in quotes). Silly things like this can be frustrating to find answers for, even with google; framing the right inquiry takes time.
