Is there a software component that's brought in when the filetype is recognised and takes a moment or so to sort itself out?

All is streaming from a ReadyNAS via a gigabit switch on good cables, so that shouldn't be an issue (and the switch isn't under pressure). FLACs just play, MP3s *may* stutter, anyone else seen this?
