I am not very knowledgeable about any sort of computer and am too old now at 73 to learn much more. I have recently bought a Raspberry Pi and the few bits that I need to get it going. I have no problem with getting the NOOBS program to work or the OpenElec XMBC program – I have succeeded in getting FLAC music from both a USB stick and a USB powered exterior HDD to play through my earphones plugged directly into the Pi – but I cannot get the same cooperation from Raspyfi. It goes into the scrolling DOS-like screen with loads of lines of text, lots of green OKs and blue INFOs, then the large 'icon'(?) of the pair of headphones, a few more lines of text and then hangs at 'switching to governor ondemand'. Being interested in hifi my main motivation for buying the Pi was to give RaspyFi a listen .
Can someone advise me what I'm doing wrong and how to proceed, please?
TIA,
Dave.

If you are using the hdmi port, you will not get the audio from the earphone jet.
Hi David,
you're doing nothing wrong, it's only that you are just half way through it!
RaspyFi is designed to turn raspberry pi into a standalone device, which will be controlled by another device, for convenience.
You can control the playback via your PC, tablet or smartphone. Withouth dealing with keyboard and mouse attached to raspberry.
So, to control it, just point your browser to
raspyfi.local/
or your raspberry's ip
you'll find the raspyfi Webui which will allow you to configure it and control its playback.
That's it, if you need more help just drop a line here!

Thanks for your response but it unfortunately does not address my question – my question was "How do I get the RaspyFi program to open further than the DOS-like screen?". FWIW I am using the HDMI output to the monitor but surely that should not stop the program from opening fully?
Thanks for any input,
Dave.
EDIT: -
Just seen the response from admin – just the information I need. I'll try to implement it sometime tomorrow – too late tonight – but good to know that help is readily at hand, so many thanks for that .

Hi admin,
Thanks for your offer and I'm afraid I need to take advantage of it. I have now got to the WebUI and it lists WEBRADIO, ramplay, NAS and USB but when I click or double-click on any of them none of them will open – clocking on 'Browse' has the same, zero, effect. I suspect I am doing something wrong but I cannot think what. I have a USB stick and a external USB hard drive connected into the powered USB hub and I have my display connected by HDMI. I also have the Pi connected into my network using a Cat6 network cable, if any of this is likely to influence the lack of response. I have not yet got it connected to my USB DAC (Amanero) as I thought I would try to take one step at a time but even that cautious approach seems to have confused the Pi and/or me.
BTW, I seem to have filled in my registration page in incorrectly, I much prefer Dave to David – I'm usually in trouble when anyone refers to me as David
TIA,
Dave.
Dave,
As anadigi said, If you are using the hdmi port, you will not get the audio from the earphone jet. same go's for USB sound cards.
I would say connect a device (amp/radio/headphone) to the audio jack on the R-pi and disconnect the HDMI for now, you dont really need the screen directly on the R-pi if you run Raspyfi. since its made to be standalone.
Then on an other device got to http://raspyfi.local for the webpage and control you R-Pi with it.
If you now go to the USB folder you should see the songs, if not you can (re) load the database from the settings pages.
Just try it with the minimal amount of connected devices
So connect:
SD with rapsyfi
Audio on the onboard jack
Network
USB stick
Power
Give it some time to boot and load the usb drives data, the use your browser on an other device to go to the webpage.
After that you can add devices like the usb hdd and test it and ofcource the usb soundcard, and if something fails to work go back to your latest working setup and reboot the device.
Hi mobey,
Thanks for your input but I'm not sure I have explained my problem accurately' Your reply seems to believe that I can see the music tracks but cannot hear any sound. If so, let me clarify: -
I can see the folders, mainly USB and NAS, but I cannot get them to open and display the tracks on there, no matter how long I wait. Clicking or double clicking on any of the folders displayed gives me a blank screen within the WebUI
FWIW the same set up but using OpenElec XMBC ' sees' the above folders and the tracks within them and also plays them (through earphones – not tried DAC yet).
If your above response still stands please forgive me but I know 'nowt' about how the Pi works.
Thanks again,
Dave .
Ok Dave, we got you. First to check, can you see something on the Webradio folder? If yes, ok.
If you play them, can you hear any sound? If yes, ok.
Then, go to settings, then database, and hit update mpd database. You should see at the bottom left that an icon is spinning, if yes, that means your drive is being recognized. Just let him some time to finish, and you'll see your files appear.
Let us know!
Hi admin,
"no" to all your questions, sorry
WebRadio is there, as are the other 3 folders, but clicking on any of them leads to a blank page with nothing spinning. Going to 'Database' and then 'Update MPD Database' brings up a little window box advising me that the database is being updated but nothing changes. In short it seems to be seeing the folders but not the FLAC files within them.
Hope my explanation makes sense to you but if not, come back with your questions.
TIA,
Dave
Hi, Dave
Fellow Noobie here (and not many years younger). If it’s any consolation it took me a number of attempts to get things working even with the latest version of Raspyfi. It’s important to do things in stages & the first thing is to confirm you are at least getting some audio out of the Pi. The audio output selected by Raspyfi is set by default in this order:
1 USB DAC
2 HDMI
3 Analogue out via the 3.5mm outlet on the Pi
I’m assuming you haven’t attached your DAC yet. You have confirmed that Raspyfi boots successfully (the headphone logo), so you should disconnect the HDMI. That will ensure you should get audio out on the analogue outlet, when you power up the Pi.
Now you need to get some audio playing through Raspyfi.
Start simply with a USB stick with a few music tracks on it, not in folders, but at the top level. Make sure you update the MPD database. Select Browse / usb1 and the music tracks should be listed. On the right of each track select the action list icon and Add to the playlist. Select Playlist, select one of the tracks and play it. You can verify it’s playing in the playback window & all being well you can hear it. You are over the first hurdle.
(Perhaps surprisingly it was using the device as an Airplay receiver that I succeeded in confirming the audio was working. At least I didn’t need to update databases on USB or NAS devices to test that. If you have some music tracks on an iPhone (3GS or later) running iOS 5 (or maybe 4.2.1) or later it should be straightforward).
I found the Webradio less straightforward, but only because I kept choosing the first station on the list, which turned out to be not functioning, so I never heard any audio. Choose one of the Linn channels – those are reliable – add to the playlist and you should be over the next hurdle.
Next you want to try out your DAC. For me that was the start of weeks of frustration, hours and hours of scouring the web for a reason why it didn’t work (caused Raspyfi to freeze in fact). Today however I cracked it and I’ve been listening to audiophile quality via Raspyfi for hours. All I’ve got to sort out now is getting Raspyfi to recognise my NAS.
It’s well worth persevering. Let us know how it goes.
Hi bisc40 and admin,
Thanks for your efforts to help but I'm beginning to return to my theory that I bought a bad 'un. The Pi eventually gets to the headphone icon at the end of the opening page but now pauses for quite a while giving a message "DCHPDiscover on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 'x"' – it repeats this line six or seven times where 'x' is a number varying between 3 and 20, It then reports "No DCHP offers received and then proceeds to the headphone icon as normal but …… the raspyfi.local page cannot be opened and only the ACT and PWR LEDs light up on the Pi. My guess is that the USB crystal isn't oscillating as none of the LEDs on the powered USB light up either. Time to return it to Amazon methinks?
Dave.
This is a clue. That means your PI cannot receive an IP address.
So, it is connected to your router via a LAN cable?
Does the same PI, in the same configuration, have internet connection? Or at least network connection?
Hi Mobey and admin,
Thanks very largely to your help and a decision by the oscillator that tonight it will do what it's supposed to do (and possibly other events of which I'm not aware ) I am now listening to rather nice music through my headphones direct from the Pi. It is surprisingly good to my ears too – I was not sure as to what to expect and I am pleasantly surprised.
Having got this far I'm now going to try to persuade the Pi and my Amanero USB DAC to 'talk' to each other – wish me luck and feel free to offer any advice, nothing is too basic for me and make no assumptions as to what you can take for granted as very little fits into that category as far as my knowledge of audio and/or computers is concerned.
Many thanks,
Dave.
Really Happy to hear you've made it!
How did you overcome your difficulties?
RaspyFi should, at least, theoretically work with amanero. Just plug it in and turn everything on… Let us know!
Hi admin,
If you had to guess I'm sure you would have guessed that just plugging in the Amanero and switching everything on just was not going to be that simple and you'd have been right. If you'd be so kind could you walk me through it, basic step by basic step, from listening through headphones directly from the Pi to listening through speakers from the Amanero.
As an example, with the Pi playing through the headphones, plugging the Amanero (already switched on, as are the maps etc.) still leaves the sound through the headphones, unplugging the headphones gives me silence and re-connecting the headphones returns the sound to them. It seems as though either the Amanero is not being recognised, is being recognised but refuses to cooperate, or the sound output is 'locked' onto the headphones.
Nothing is too basic for me to cock up .
FWIW, on Playback the Volume control is locked on 100% (nothing I can do stops it springing back immediately to 100%) which is just a tad too loud to be comfortable.
TIA,
Dave.
Unplug HDMI and headphones, plug-in the Amanero. Then restart the Pi and see if it works.
The volume control is disabled by default. Open the web interface and go to "Settings" then "MPD". Here you will find a drop-down menu for "Mixer type". Change it to "Software". Now you should be able to change the volume.
Hope this helps.
