Just to report, I had exactly the same error and I solved with:
vm.min_free_kbytes = 32768 in /etc/sysctl.conf
smsc95xx.turbo_mode=N in /boot/cmdline.txt”

NOT in turbo mode, the N stands for NO/NOT.

It seems dwc_otg.speed=1 solves my problem. If there is no other way to get around this, I guess I should use my Pi solely for playing music (in my case via ShairPort) and get another Pi for NAS since USB 1.1 is awfully slow…

Same problem here: I have a Nuforce ICON HDP connected to my raspbian based mpd installation via USB. Audio is 100% clear and great when I force “format” ”44100:16:2″ in mpd.conf.

When I try to play hisres-flac higher than 44100 for bitperfect audioplay and comment out the format option, sound has massive dropouts and sound quality is very bad.

Also tried the latest rpi-updates: (Linux raspberrypi 3.6.11+ #371 PREEMPT Thu Feb 7 16:31:35 GMT 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux) and setting “dwc_otg.speed=1″ in cmdline.txt … no success here.

RPi, mpd and Nuforce in teamwork still deliver great audio quality on my headphones. I’ll give raspyfi a try next time. Good work.
